Syracuse cross country returns to the trails on Friday when the team travels to Madison for the Wisconsin adidas Invitational. The third annual event, which has shaped up to be the most competitive race to this point in the season, will take place on the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course, with races starting at 2:00 p.m. (EDT). Friday's invitational will allow the Orange to see where they stand against teams they will most likely see again at the end of the season.
Friday's race boasts 40 men's teams and 42 women's teams, making the contest bigger in numbers than the NCAA Championship will be later this season. Out of these teams, 19 men's squads are ranked in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country (USTFCCCA) national poll and 18 teams are ranked on the women's side.
The Orange women are going into this weekend looking to maintain their top-10 national ranking and improve on it against a competitive field. The men, who are coming off a disappointing performance at the Paul Short Invitational, are planning on showing what they are truly capable of against the nation's best.
SU in the Polls:
The Syracuse women remain ranked second in the USTFCCA regional poll and eighth in the national poll. The men have also neither moved up or down in the past week, remaining ranked third in the regional poll and 21st in the national poll.
Last Time Out:
In the first race against BIG EAST and nationally ranked opponents, the Syracuse cross country team showed that it can still compete with the best teams in the country at the Paul Short Invitational. The women's team finished third overall while the men's team placed fifth. Lauren Penney and Pat Dupont led the charge for the Orange for the second straight week with a fifth place and 11th place finish, respectively.
The women's race featured BIG EAST teams claiming the top-four finishes, led by Providence, which had three runners finish in the top-ten. Defending national champion Villanova trailed just three points behind in second place, followed by Syracuse in third and Georgetown in fourth place.
Penney (20:32) fifth place finish led all seven SU women's harriers, while Sarah Pagano just only six seconds behind Penney with a time of 20:38. Senior Natalie Busby claimed a time of 21:09, good for a 24th place finish while Rebekah MacKay (21:23) and Heather Stephens (21:25) battled for a 44th and 45th place finish. Also competing for the women were freshmen Shaylyn Tuite (56th; 21:36) and Jessie Petersen (65th; 21:44).
Winning the men's race was Oklahoma, winning by 111 points over second place finisher and BIG EAST foe Georgetown. The BIG EAST had four teams finish in the top ten in the Hoyas finishing second, Villanova in fourth, SU in fifth and Providence in sixth.
Dupont's time of 24:27 set the pace for the men's team, while Tito Medrano was the next Syracuse runner to cross the finish in 35th place with a time of 25:00. Freshman Andrew Palmer was right on Medrano's heels throughout the race, finishing just two seconds behind the 2009 All-American at 25:02, good for a 38th place finish.
Also competing for the men's team was Forrest Misenti (72nd; 25:21), Joseph Whelan (73rd; 25:23), Robert Molke (89th; 25:29), and Sean Keefe (106th; 25:36).
