JAMAICA, N.Y. – Syracuse couldn't take advantage of its offensive opportunities and allowed a goal in each half in a 2-0 setback at St. John's on Friday, Oct. 21. The Orange ends the regular season with a 7-7-3 overall record, including a 6-5 mark in BIG EAST play, while the Red Storm goes to 9-8-1 overall, 5-6-0 in league play.
Jen Leaverton recorded both goals for St. John's. The first came in the ninth minute when she put her shot in the left side of the goal. Leaverton scored again when she took a diagonal pass from Michelle Murino and found the back of the net in the 47th minute.
The Orange outshot St. John's, 11-6, and had four corner kicks to six for the Red Storm. Syracuse goalkeeper Brittany Anghel made two saves, as did St. John's Lauren Ferris.
"We played in windy conditions on a tough surface," said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. "St. John's plays a very direct style. They are very opportunistic and they capitalized on two defensive mistakes. I'm proud of the way the team fought to get back in the game."
Syracuse finishes third in the BIG EAST American Division and earns a bye to the quarterfinals of the league tournament. The Orange will face either Georgetown or Louisville on Sunday, Oct. 30.
