WASHINGTON, D.C. – In its first BIG EAST Tournament appearance since 2005, Syracuse heads to the nation's capital to face Georgetown in the quarterfinals on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m. The Orange finished the regular season with a 7-7-3 record, 6-5 in the conference. The Hoyas posted a 14-5 regular-season record, going 8-3 in the conference.
THE SERIES
Syracuse and Georgetown will meet for the 12th time at North Kehoe Field in Washington, D.C. on Sunday in a BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinal match-up. The all-time series is tied, 5-5-1. The conference tournament tilt marks the second contest between the Hoyas and the Orange this season, as GU captured a 3-1 victory at the SU Soccer Stadium on September 23. Georgetown is riding a three-game series winning streak dating back to a 1-0 triumph in the 2005 BIG EAST Tournament. The Hoyas have won their last three regular-season games heading into this year's tournament, shutting out their last two opponents.
SCOUTING THE HOYAS
The Hoyas are led by a potent offensive charge, with three student-athletes among the top ten in goal-scoring in the BIG EAST. Camille Trujillo is fifth in the league with 11 goals, while Daphne Corboz is tied for seventh with nine and Ingrid Well is tied for ninth with eight. Wells also leads the BIG EAST in assists (11) and assists per game (0.58). Elizabeth Hanna has started in goal for 14 of the Hoyas' regular season games, grabbing 54 saves and six shutouts, which has her tied for fifth in the conference.
ORANGE IN THE BIG EAST TOURNAMENT
Sunday's BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinal match-up versus Georgetown marks the Orange's fifth appearance in the championship, and its first since 2005. Syracuse has a 2-4 overall record in tournament play. SU's last win was registered in a 3-1 victory against Rutgers in the 2000 BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinals. The Orange has reached the semifinals twice, the farthest SU has ever advanced, in 1998 and 2000.
ORANGE RETAINS REGIONAL RANKING
For the second straight week, the Orange is ranked eighth in the Continental Tire NSCAA Northeast Regional Rankings. SU joins seven fellow BIG EAST foes in the 10-team poll. Three out of Syracuse's five conference losses have come against squads in the Northeast Region top five, as No.1 Marquette, No. 2 West Virginia, and No. 5 Georgetown have defeated SU earlier in the 2011 campaign.
LIST OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS KEEPS GROWING
The 2011 Orange is enjoying one of the finest seasons in recent years. In addition to qualifying for the BIG EAST Tournament, Syracuse has won seven games this season, which is its highest total since head coach Phil Wheddon took over the helm of the program in 2008. The Orange also registered six BIG EAST victories, the most most since 1998 and the second-highest total in school history.
