With only three points separating the second through fourth place teams in the men's race, the Syracuse cross country team finished fourth at the BIG EAST Championships on Saturday at the E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park in Louisville. The Orange women finished in a tie for fourth with West Virginia, who were led by Lauren Penney's 10th place finish overall. Pat Dupont led the men with a ninth place finish.
"The men ran a fair race and we continue to improve," head coach Chris Fox said. "Three points out of second in the best conference in the country is pretty good. The women tied for fourth and every team that beat us has a legitimate chance of winning the national championship."
Villanova claimed the conference title in both the men's and women's race, while Georgetown, Louisville and SU finished within three points of each other on the men's side. In a battle of top-ten teams, Providence and Georgetown claimed the second and third spots behind the Wildcats, closely followed by the Orange.
Dupont hung with the top men's runners throughout the race, crossing the finish line with a time of 23:51.7 to earn All-BIG EAST honors. Cincinnati's Eric Finan finished first overall with a time of 23:17.70. Tito Medrano was the next harrier to finish for the Orange at 24:10.60, good for a 19th place finish. Junior Forrest Misenti (24.11.0) and sophomore Sean Keefe (24:11.4) claimed the 21st and 23rd slots, respectively. Andrew Palmer finished 25th with a time of 24:12.20 to round out the top-five finishers for the men.
Also competing for the SU men's squad was freshmen Max Straneva (24:18.70; 26th) and Ryan Urie (24:25.90; 30th).
Penney led the Orange women for the fourth straight race this season with a time of 20:21.60 in the 6k. Penney's split time of 11:03 was just two seconds behind Sheila Reid and Bogdana Mimic of Villanova, who placed one-two. Sarah Pagano was right behind Penney throughout the race, and finished 14th overall (20:33.1) to join her teammate on the All-BIG EAST team. Senior Heather Stephens was 17th at 20:36.80.
Shaylyn Tuite nearly finished in the top-20, ultimately placing 21st overall (20:53.40), and Natalie Busby rounded out the top-five SU harriers in 30th place with a time of 21:12.5. Also competing on Saturday for the Orange was freshman Jessie Peterson (21:13.80; 33rd) and Rebekah MacKay (21:29.10; 40th).
Syracuse will be off next weekend before heading to Buffalo, N.Y. for the NCAA Northeast Regional on November 12, where the Orange will look to defend its 2009 and 2010 titles.
