Despite a 2-of-7 performance on the power play, Syracuse was unable to complete the comeback against Northeastern as the Huskies (1-0-0) walked away with a 5-2 victory on Friday at Matthews Arena. Holly Carrie-Mattimoe and Megan Skelly scored for the Orange (1-2-0), while Jenesica Drinkwater made 23 saves in goal. The Orange will travel to New Hampshire on Saturday for a 5:00 p.m. matchup with the Wildcats.
Shots for the game were even at 28 apiece, while Northeastern was 1-of-6 on the power play.
Northeastern jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period with goals from Lucie Povova and Casey Pickett. With Syracuse in the box for interference eight minutes into the stanza, Povova deflected a shot from Soni St. Martin at the point that beat Drinkwater five-hole.
The Huskies made it 2-0 less than three minutes later when Kendall Coyne sidestepped a SU defender before sending a pass across the crease to Casey Pickett for the one-timer past Drinkwater.
Syracuse's best chance of the frame came midway through the period with the Orange on the power play as Jessica Sorensen's shot from the slot was gloved down by Schelling.
The Orange quickly made it a 2-1 game early in the first period as Carrie-Mattimoe scored her first goal of the season with SU on the power play. Mattimoe, stationed in between the hashmarks, redirected a shot by Shiann Darkangelo past Schelling for Syracuse's first power play tally of the season.
Darkangelo nearly knotted the score at two minutes when she pounced on a loose puck in the neutral zone and went in on a breakaway. Darkangelo's shot, however, whistled high over the crossbar.
Northeastern responded less than five minutes later, however, as Brittany Esposito netted her first goal of the season, toe-dragging past a defenseman before threading a low shot through traffic and past Drinkwater.
SU cut the Huskie lead to one in the first two minutes of the third period as Skelly potted her first goal of the season off a loose puck in front of the net. Akane Hosoyamada controlled the puck at the point during a Syracuse power play, before trying to send a shot through a screen. The puck was knocked down in front of the crease, where Skelly collected it before tossing a backhand into the lower left corner of the net.
The Huskies regained its two-goal advantage with 5:52 left in regulation as Katie MacSorley snapped a shot over the left shoulder of Drinkwater and into the top right corner. Coyne added an empty-net tally with 13 seconds remaining in the period to ice the game.
