PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Syracuse extended its winning streak with a 3-0 victory at Pittsburgh on Friday, Oct. 7. The Orange (6-4-3, 5-2) has now won four consecutive games for the first time since the 2003 season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Anghel made four saves and posted her 12th career shutout in the victory. She is now tied with Katie Karlander (1999-00) for third place on Syracuse's all-time shutouts leader list.
Syracuse dominated the first half with a good speed of play and rhythm. The Orange dictated the tempo which led to its first scoring opportunity. Junior Rosina Callisto blasted a shot from 25 yards out in to the top corner of the goal to give the Orange a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute. Syracuse continued to get opportunities as the Panthers' (1-10-4, 0-5-2) defenders dropped off. Junior Tina Romagnuolo took advantage and put a shot from 25 yards out in the back of the net in the 39th minute to give Syracuse a 2-0 lead at halftime. The goal is the 17th of Romagnuolo's career, giving her sole possession of fifth place on SU's career leader list.
Pittsburgh came out on fire in the second half and put more players up front. The Orange adjusted and tallied its final goal in the 78th minute. Senior Casey Ramirez crossed the ball from the left side behind the Panther defenders to sophomore Brittany Kinmond. Pitt goalkeeper Nicole D'Agostino came out to play the ball, but Kinmond got there first and scored from the right corner to give the Orange the 3-0 victory.
“I'm proud of the way we played,” said Syacuse head coach# Phil Wheddon#. “We shut out our opponent and some of that came from being proactive, coming out to defend and not allowing shots.
Once again it was great to see so many family and friends at the game," Wheddon continued. ”I made it feel like a home game."
Syracuse will put its winning streak on the line on Sunday when it faces West Virginia in Morgantown at 1 p.m.
