Following a competitive BIG EAST Championship two weeks ago, the Syracuse cross country team will travels to Amherst, N.Y. on Saturday for the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships. The races will be held at the Audubon Golf Course beginning with the men's 10,000 meter race at 12:00 p.m. and the women's 6,000 meter race at 1:15 p.m.
The Syracuse men and women are coming off of the BIG EAST Championships two weeks ago, where the men finished fourth and the women tied for fourth. This weekend in Amherst, the men and women will both be eyeing a top-two finish, which secures an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. on November 21st.
The Orange will also be looking to defend its 2009 and 2010 NCAA Northeast Region titles. Since head coach Chris Fox took the reins in 2005, the Orange has seen its performance at the Northeast Regional steadily increase.
SU In The Polls:
The SU women remain ranked ninth in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country (USTFCCCA) National Poll and second in the regional poll. The men have moved up slightly to 29th in the national poll and have moved ahead of Providence to the third ranked spot in the regional poll.
Last Time Out:
Two weeks ago at the BIG EAST Championships the men finished fourth and the women tied for fourth. For the men it was a step in the right direction for this season, finishing only three points out of second. Although tying for fourth might seem dismal for the women this season, the teams they finished behind are all top-10 teams in the nation as well.
Lauren Penney led the women at BIG EAST's with a 10th place finish in 20:21. She was followed by Sarah Pagano who finished 14th in 20:33. Senior Heather Stephens was 17th in 20:36. Freshman Shaylyn Tuite finished 21st overall in 20:53 and Natalie Busby rounded out the top-five in 30th with a time of 21:12.
Pat Dupont led the men finishing 9th in 23:51. Senior Tito Medrano was next to cross the line for the Orange in 19th with a time of 24:10. Forrest Misenti and Sean Keefe both finished with a time of 24:11 in the 21st and 23rd places, respectively. Andrew Palmer was the fifth man for the Orange in 25th place with a time of 24:12.
