For the third straight season, the Syracuse men's and women's cross country teams won the NCAA Northeast Regionals titles. With five top-10 finishers combined, both squads secured an automatic berth into the NCAA Championships, which will be held on Nov. 21 in Terre Haute, Ind. Pat Dupont led the men with a fourth place finish, while Lauren Penney finished second overall for the women's team.
"This is a great day for our program," head coach Chris Fox said. "It was an unexpected win on both sides but it is what we wanted. The kids came up big."
Dupont, along with Tito Medrano, Joseph Whelan, Sean Keefe and Forrest Misenti earned All-Region honors for the men, while Penney, Sarah Pagano and Shaylyn Tuite garnered honors for the women.
Medrano (31:35.00) and Whelan finished in ninth and 10th places in the men's 10k race, respectively, following right behind Dupont's time of 31:21.40. Whelan ran the final nine kilometers without one of his shoes, and finished with a time of 31:35.00 en route to All-Region status. Iona finished second in team scoring with 72 points, 18 back from the Orange. They were followed by Columbia (96), Providence (108) and Brown (178).
Keefe and Misenti ran neck-and-neck throughout the race, narrowly missing top-ten finishes and ultimately finishing in 15th (31:42.90) and 16th (31:45.50). Max Straneva (33rd; 32:21.70) and Andrew Palmer (69th; 32:59.80) also ran for the Orange.
Penney's time of 20:39.10 paced an Orange team that defeated Boston College by 11 points. Cornell, Columbia and Providence rounded out the top-five team finishes for the women's 6k race. Pagano finished in eighth place overall with a time of 21:02.40 while Tuite crossed the finish line in 27th place at 21:28.80.
Heather Stephens ran closely behind Tuite, finishing in 31st with a time of 21:35.40 and Rebekah MacKay rounded out the Syracuse scorers in 48th place (21:57.50). Also competing for the SU women were Natalie Busby (54th; 22:05.50) and Jessie Petersen (87th; 22:43.10).
