Behind All-American performances from Pat Dupont and Lauren Penney, the Syracuse cross country teams concluded its 2011 season with a 15th place men's finish and 17th place women's finish at the NCAA Championships on Monday. Dupont led the Orange with a 37th place finish en route to his second straight All-America selection, while Penney became the first SU women in program history to earn All-America status with her 29th place finish.
"Pat Dupont and Lauren Penney were great," head coach Chris Fox said. "They earned well deserved All-America honors."
Dupont is the first Syracuse harrier since Roy Osterhaut in 1952 and 1953 to earn All-American selections in back-to-back seasons. His time of 30:09.30 set the pace for the Orange men. Finishing next for Syracuse was senior Tito Medrano, who was 67th with a time of 30:44 while Joseph Whelan was 82nd (30:51).
Max Straneva (101st; 31:02) and Forrest Misenti (117th; 31:12) ran close to each other throughout the 10,000-meter competition, while Sean Keefe and Andrew Palmer also ran for the Orange.
Penney (20:19) finished her senior season leading the Orange in every race she competed in during 2011. Sarah Pagano finished 52nd overall with a time of 20:49 and Natalie Busby was 82nd at 21:07. Senior Heather Stephens (118th; 21:25) and freshman Shaylyn Tuite (128th; 21:28) rounded out the SU women's scorers, while Rebekah MacKay and Jessie Petersen also ran for SU.
Syracuse closes the season after capturing both the men's and women's NCAA Northeast Regional titles for the third straight season. Under Northeast Coach of the Year Chris Fox, SU also finished fourth in the highly competitive BIG EAST Championship earlier this season.
