PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Katie Hursey of the Syracuse University women's cross country team has been named SU's 2010-11 American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Institutional Female Scholar-Athlete Award winner. One student-athlete from each of the 16 BIG EAST institutions received this honor and will be awarded a $2,000 scholarship. Hursey is one of four cross country runners to be named to the list.
The Hampstead, Md. native is a physical education major and has compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.798. She has been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in each semester at Syracuse. Hursey was recognized as a member of the Division I USTFCCCA All-Academic Team during her freshman and junior season.
This past season, Hursey led the Orange to its second consecutive Northeast Regional Championship. At the NCAA Championship, Hursey's performance piloted SU to a program-best 10th-place finish. She also helped the squad match a program-best third-place finish at the BIG EAST Championship. She earned her third All-Northeast Region and third second All-BIG EAST honors for her performance.
In 2009, she was named the Northeast Region Woman Athlete of the Year. This feat came after Hursey became SU's first women's Northeast Region individual champion and led the Orange to the program's first regional title.
The American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is one of a number of scholarships presented by the BIG EAST Conference and American Eagle Outfitters during the 2010-11 academic year. Thirty-two student-athletes (one male and one female from each of the BIG EAST's 16 member institutions) will be named as the winners of the American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete Scholarships. The conference also names male and female American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Basketball Scholar-Athletes of the Year and an American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
