SYRACUSE – Juniors Iasia Hemingway and Troya Berry, sophomore Carmen Tyson-Thomas and freshman Rachel Coffey represented the Syracuse University women's basketball at a special “Bins For Wins” presentation at the Food Back of Central New York on Tuesday, May 10.
The “Bins For Wins” program is a partnership between Syracuse University and the Tops Friendly Markets. For each Syracuse home victory, Tops Friendly Markets agreed to donate one bin of food to the Food Bank of Central New York. On Tuesday, Tops turned over five pallets of food, which equal 170 cases, valued at more than $4,000. The Orange accumulated 20 home wins during the 2010-11 campaign.
Tops Friendly Markets was represented by Kathy Allen, manager of community relations. The Food Bank of Central New York was represented by executive director Thomas Slater and director of philanthropy Lynn Hy.
In April, members of the Syracuse men's basketball were on hand for a special "Jams For Slams" presentation. The "Jams For Slams" program is a partnership between Syracuse University and Tops Friendly Markets. For each Syracuse dunk in the Carrier Dome, Tops Friendly Markets agreed to donate one case of jelly and one case of peanut butter to the Food Bank of Central New York. In turn, Tops donated more than 156 cases of jelly and peanut butter. The Orange accumulated 78 dunks during the 2010-11 campaign.
In March, members of the Syracuse football team delivered donated food items from Tops Friendly Markets to the Food Bank of Central New York. The “Touchdowns for Turkeys” program, launched five years ago, is an agreement by Tops Friendly Markets to donate seven turkeys to the Food Bank for every Syracuse touchdown scored in the Carrier Dome during the football season. This year, in place of the turkeys, 3,456 cans of protein were donated because of a greater need according to the Food Bank.
