INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Syracuse University women's soccer and women's cross country programs have earned the NCAA Division I Academic Performance Rate (APR) public recognition award. Both teams were honored for achieving and APR score in the top 10 percent of teams in the sport in Division I. It is the fifth consecutive award for women's cross country and the first for women's soccer.
"We are truly proud of the hard work these students put into the classroom while maintaining excellence on the field," said director of athletics Dr. Daryl Gross. "The commitment to be multi-dimensional and extraordinary fits the vision and mission of Syracuse athletics. Congratulations to these teams as they have set the bar excellence for the department."
The Orange is one of 52 Division I women's cross country programs to earn the scholastic honor, and one of three from the BIG EAST Conference.
"Our program is once again very pleased to have achieved this honor,” said head coach Chris Fox. “Our women work hard in and outside the classroom and have achieved a healthy, successful balance of academics and athletics. We congratulate and thank them for their dedication. We are certainly proud. This team is a prime example of what it is to be extraordinary student-athletes. This is affirmation that Syracuse and the program continue to attract the finest student athletes."
Syracuse is among 36 Division I women's soccer squads to be honored with the prestigious award. It is also one of seven schools to represent the BIG EAST Conference on the award list.
“Congratulations to all of our players for their consistent pursuit of excellence,” said head coach Phil Wheddon. “It's a fantastic compliment to the players for the balance they have between their academic and athletics commitments. There's a reason they are called student-athletes. It's a tremendous honor for the players and the program.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
