Syracuse Earns Strong Academic Progress Rate Scores

The NCAA National Office announced the 2009-10 NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) data on Tuesday, May 24, and the Syracuse University Athletic Department earned passing grades in all 19 sports.

The NCAA annually honors teams earning APR in the top 10 percent of the teams in each NCAA-sponsored sport. Syracuse's Women's Cross Country and Women's Soccer teams were singled out this spring among the 909 teams that earned Public Recognition Awards.

Of Syracuse's 19 sports that earned APR numbers, 13 met or exceeded the national Division I average.

According to the NCAA, the APR is a “term-by-term measure of eligibility and retention for Division I athletes that was developed as an early indicator of eventual graduation rates. The APR awards two points each term to student-athletes who met academic-eligibility standards and who remain with the institution. Teams scoring below 925 out of 1,000 can face penalties, such as scholarship losses and restrictions on practice and competition. The released APR scores are multi-year rates based on the scores from the 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 academic years.

This year marks the seventh year the APR has been tracked. It is the sixth year of immediate penalties (for scores below 925) and the fifth year of historically-based penalties (scores below 900).
