Three teams from last season's NCAA Championship Tournament highlight the 2011-12 Syracuse ice hockey schedule, announced by head coach Paul Flanagan on Friday. The Orange will play 18 of their 35 games at home at the Tennity Ice Pavilion, and will face off against 23 nonconference opponents in addition to their 12 game College Hockey America conference schedule. SU is coming off a 14-16-6 season that saw the Orange reach the CHA Championship game for the second straight season.
"Our staff and program are very excited about our upcoming 2011-2012 season," Flanagan said. "We once again will face a very challenging CHA league schedule while also being afforded an opportunity to play teams from the ECAC, WCHA and Hockey East leagues."
SU will commence its season on a four-game road trip beginning with a weekend set against St. Cloud State and Minnesota at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis on September 30 and October 1, respectively. This will be the third time that Syracuse and Minnesota have ever squared off and the first time since the 2009-10 season.
Following afternoon games with Northeastern on October 7 and New Hampshire on October, Syracuse will play six of its next seven games at home starting against Clarkson on October 14 at 7 p.m. Other teams traveling to the Tennity Ice Pavilion during the SU homestand include Colgate, Union and Connecticut.
The Orange will begin November with a trip to Ithaca, N.Y. to take on the Big Red of Cornell University, who reached the national semifinal last season. In Syracuse's last trip to Lynah Rink, SU won an overtime thriller against the then-No. 8 Big Red, 2-1 on January 5, 2010. After a pair of home games against Ohio State University on November 18-19, the Orange will head to Rensselaer for a weekend set with the Engineers.
CHA play gets underway on December 9-10 when Robert Morris, host of this year's CHA Tournament, comes to town for two games at the Tennity Ice Pavilion prior to a three-week layoff for final exams and the New Year's break.
SU returns to action in early January with 10 of its final 14 games against conference opponents. In a rematch of last year's CHA Championship game, Mercyhurst returns to Syracuse to start a five-game Orange homestand for two games on January 6-7. A 7 p.m. game on January 17 against Cornell and two tilts with Niagara on January 20-21 will also be featured.
Syracuse will conclude conference play in Hamden, Conn. for two games with Quinnipiac on January 27-28 before closing out the regular season with weekend sets against Robert Morris, at Mercyhurst and at Niagara.
