STORRS, Conn. – Syracuse had its two-game unbeaten streak snapped on Thursday, Sept. 15 after losing to Connecticut, 1-0, in Storrs, Conn. The Orange (1-3-3, 0-1) had tied its last two opponents before opening BIG EAST play against the Huskies (4-3-0, 1-0).
“To come to a place like Connecticut and play a quality team is a tough challenge,” head coach Phil Wheddon said. “Our players were superb tonight. They fought for every ball. Every player who stepped out on the field gave it everything they had, and those who didn't play gave everything they had to support the team. I couldn't be more proud of the players. Our challenge is to do it again Sunday against Providence, which is coming off a 2-0 win against St. John's.”
Syracuse's offense came out strong as it earned two corner kicks in the first seven minutes of play, but couldn't convert on either chance. Connecticut scored the only goal of the game on its first shot in the 11th minute. Jessica Shufelt served the ball into the box on a cross to Danielle Schulmann, who put her shot in the back of the net from an acute angle for her first goal of the season.
After five consecutive shots by Connecticut during a span of four minutes, Syracuse's offense dictated possession and produced three corner kicks and shots on goal by sophomore Cecilia Borgstrom and sophomore Brittany Kinmond, but UConn goalkeeper Jessica Dulski stopped both attempts to keep the Orange off the scoreboard. Connecticut had two chances to add to its lead in the final minutes of the first half as Devin Prendergast got off two shots. Syracuse sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Anghel saved the first shot and the Orange defense blocked the second with three seconds remaining to keep the score at 1-0 at halftime.
The defense kept Syracuse within striking distance with its play to open the second half as both teams played a player down after each squad received a red card in the 32nd minute. Anghel made one save and the Orange blocked two shots and successfully defended against three corner kicks in the first 21 minutes of play. Syracuse once again controlled possession in the final 10 minutes of the game and produced several scoring opportunities. Junior Jenna Rickan hit the post with her shot before junior Rosina Callisto's shot was stopped by Dulski as the Orange could not score the equalizer and lost its third one-goal game of the season.
“We dictated possession and had some quality chances,” Wheddon said. “Their goalkeeper made a fantastic save on shot by Cecilia (Borgstrom) and Jenna (Rickan) hit the post. Either one of those shots could have tied the game.”
Connecticut recorded 14 shots overall, four on goal, while Syracuse had three shots on goal and six total. The Huskies earned nine corner kicks to five for the Orange. Anghel and Dulski finished with three saves apiece.
After opening the season with seven consecutive road games, the Orange hosts Providence in its home opener on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission is free. All fans are invited to take part in a food drive that will benefit the flood victims in Binghamton, N.Y.
“We want to thank the family and friends who supported us tonight and at all of our games on the road this season,” Wheddon said. “We're looking forward to coming home and playing in front of our fans on Sunday. Hopefully we'll put on a good performance for them.”
