ORANGE CONTINUES BIG EAST DOMINANCE

SYRACUSE – The fifth-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team opened BIG EAST Conference play with a 5-1 victory versus Rutgers this evening at J.S. Coyne Stadium. The Orange improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the league, while the Scarlet Knights moved to 1-5, 0-1. The Orange has now won a BIG EAST record 15 consecutive and 18 of its last 19 BIG EAST regular-season games.
SU controlled the first half, scoring two goals in the game's first 16 minutes. Junior back Amy Kee tallied the first goal off a traditional penalty corner. Junior forward Kelsey Millman provided the push and senior midfielder Martina Loncarica the stop. The assist was Loncarica's school record 121st point. The three-time All-American now sits alone on top of SU's career points list.
Millman recorded a goal of her own just four minutes later, when sophomore back Laura Hahnefeldt sent a ball towards a diving of Millman. It was Millman's fourth goal of the year and Hahnefeldt's second assist.
Senior forward Heather Susek gave the Orange a 3-0 advantage after picking up a loose ball in front of the cage and beating Rutgers goalkeeper Sarah Struby.
A goal by the Scarlet Knights' Carlie Rouh on a penalty corner at 51:20 put the margin at 3-1.
Freshman midfielder Jordan Page scored her first career goal at 63:21 on an assists from sophomore back Anna Crumb.
Senior midfielder Liz McInerney added the final goal on another penalty corner. Sophomore midfielder Leonie Geyer sent a ball to McInerney on the far post. The senior found the back of the cage for her third goal of the year.
Syracuse outshot Rutgers, 16-2, and held a 9-2 advantage in penalty corners. Junior goalkeeper Leann Stiver made one save in the win.
The Orange returns to action on Sunday when it plays host to Princeton at 2 p.m.
