HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Sarah Pagano and Lauren Penney battled each other in the final meters of the women's 6k race at the Colgate Invitational, ultimately finishing in a tie for first to lead the women's cross country squad past Colgate and Cornell on Saturday in Hamilton, N.Y. Pat Dupont set the pace for the men's squad, narrowly knocking off Colgate's Chris Johnson to secure a victory in the men's 8k race.
"It was a good mix of youth and veterans," head coach Chris Fox said. "We were ok for what it is. It's the middle of September, and we're trying to be good on Halloween (at the BIG EAST Championship)."
The SU women placed six harriers in the top ten spots overall, led by Pagano and Penney's time of 21:00. Senior Heather Stephens and freshman Shaylyn Tuite were neck and neck down the stretch to finish in a tie for fifth (21:31), while Jessie Petersen crossed the finish in seventh place with a time of 21:44. Rounding out the top-15 finishers for the Orange were Rebekah MacKay (t-8th; 21:48), Natalie Busby (11th; 22:00), and Alexandra Clinton (13th; 22:12).
Following Dupont's time of 25:18, Andrew Palmer was the next Orange runner to cross the finish in fourth place overall with a time of 25:28. Reed Kamyszek (9th; 25:39), Jon Squeri (11th; 25:43) and Tito Medrano (14th; 25:50) also placed in the top-15 for SU.
Syracuse cross country will return to the trails in two weeks at the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa. on September 30.
