SYRACUSE, N.Y. – With the score tied at one at halftime, the No. 5 Syracuse field hockey team (7-2) scored two goals just four minutes into the second half to defeat No. 17 Boston University (5-4) on Sunday afternoon at J.S. Coyne Stadium, 3-2.
Sunday's win extends SU's home winning streak to 20 games, dating back to the 2008 season. The Orange statistically dominated the Terriers, holding a 22-4 shot advantage and a 12-2 edge in penalty corners. The teams combined for four green cards and one yellow card during the physical match.
Syracuse took an early 1-0 lead less than nine minutes into the first half when Iona Holloway scored her first goal of the season on a deflection following a Liz McInerney shot from just inside the circle.
BU knotted the score with 4:48 left in the first half when Amira Downes finished a fast break with a shot into the right side of the cage.
The Orange wasted no time in re-gaining its lead coming out of the halftime break as Kelsey Millman potted her sixth goal of the year 4:04 into the second half. Less than one minute later, Heather Susek extended the SU lead to two when she gathered her own rebound and snuck a shot past Terrier goalkeeper Jess Maroney, prompting a goaltending change by BU.
Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Sayer was inserted into the game in the final ten minutes, replacing Leann Stiver, and Boston University cut the SU advantage to one when Macey Gaumond's shot trickled over the goal line for her seventh score of the season.
Syracuse continues its seven-game homestand on Friday when the Orange host Providence at 4 p.m. from J.S. Coyne Stadium.
