SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Binghamton (4-5-0) held off a late rally by Syracuse (2-6-0) and scored a 2-1 victory against the Orange on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at the SU Soccer Stadium. Senior Dan Summers scored his first goal of the season, but the Orange could not overtake the Bearcats.
Neither team registered a goal in the first 45 minutes. Binghamton was the aggressor in the first half, outshooting Syracuse, 7-4. Senior goalkeeper Phil Boerger kept the Bearcats in check, making two saves in the opening stanza.
Binghamton eventually scored the game's first goal. In the 54th minute, junior Jake Keegan crossed the ball into the box. Senior Jerome Robinson headed the pass into the goal to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
In the 71st minute, the Orange came inches away of tying the game when senior Nick Roydhouse hit the cross bar on a shot from the top of the box.
Three minutes later, the Bearcats added what seemed to be the insurance goal when sophomore Luke Halberg headed in a cross from freshman Steven Celeste to extend Binghamton's lead to 2-0.
Syracuse attempted to rally late in the game. In the 89th minute, the team's efforts finally paid off on Summers' tally. Junior Lars Muller played a through ball to a streaking Summers, who put the ball past Bearcats sophomore keeper Chris Hayen to cut the Binghamton lead to 2-1.
With only seconds remaining Syracuse nearly equalized the match. Summers streaked down the field and took a shot from just inside the top of the box. Hayen made a diving stop to end the Orange threat and secure the victory.
Binghamton held a slim shot advantage, outshooting Syracuse, 18-13. Boerger made three saves to bring his career total to 141. Hayen recorded two saves in the win.
Syracuse will travel to Pittsburgh on Saturday, Oct. 1 for its second BIG EAST match of the regular season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
Match Notes: Freshman Nick Perea was credited with an assist on Summers' goal ... For Perea, it was his first collegiate point ... Muller's helper was the first of his career ... Summers' tally was the first at Syracuse after transferring from Hartwick ... The match was the Orange's last non-conference game of 2011.
