Cross Country Secures Win At Harry Lang

HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Syracuse cross country opened the 2011 season with a win in the men's and women's race at the Harry Lang Invitational in Hamilton, N.Y. on Saturday. The Orange, who ran many of their younger harriers, claimed the second through seventh spots in the both the men's 6k race and the women's 4,200-meter race.
"We are very pleased," said head coach Chris Fox. "We ran mostly young, inexperienced runners. We will run our varsity team (at the Colgate Invitational) in two weeks."
Redshirt freshman Jon Squeri finished second overall in the men's race with a time of 20:54, closely followed by redshirt sophomore Joseph Bubniak at 21:13. Also running for SU was David Wilson (21:18), Matthew Bennett (21:32), Jonathan Aziz (21:42) and Andrew Nelson (21:44), who finished in fourth though seventh place, respectively.
Rebekah MacKay led at Syracuse runners in the women's field with a second place finish with a time of 16:11). Alexandra Clinton and Carly Hamond were neck-and-neck throughout their race, with Clinton ultimately coming out on top in third place (16:30) and Hamond in fourth (16:35). Brenna Symoniak (16:52), Erin Cawley (16:55) and Katie Weisenburger rounded out the women's harriers in fifth, sixth and seventh place.
The Orange will return to the trails on September 17 for the Colgate Invitational back in Hamilton, N.Y.
