Box Score
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Syracuse recorded a season-high in goals scored in a 4-1 win against Seton Hall on Friday, Sept. 30 in South Orange, N.J. The Orange's second consecutive victory improves its record to 4-4-3, 3-2 in the BIG EAST, while the Pirates go to 7-3-2 overall, 3-2 in conference play.
“I'm proud of the overall effort ,” SU head coach Phil Wheddon said. “After the first 20 minutes, we settled down. We moved the ball very well. Seton Hall plays with a lot of pace and is very fast. Our defense did a fantastic job most of the night. And the midfield did a great job of denying service, which was part of Seton Hall's game plan.”
Seton Hall applied the offensive pressure early, but Syracuse goalkeeper Brittany Anghel made two saves in the first three minutes to keep the Pirates off the scoreboard. After SHU's fast start, Syracuse's offense came alive and produced quality scoring chances for juniors Rosina Callisto and Jenna Rickan. The Orange broke through in the 26th minute when senior Casey Ramirez gathered a pass from freshman Brittany Kinmond and scored on a shot from 18 yards out on the right side to give SU a 1-0 lead. The goal is Ramirez's first this season, and the assist is the first of Kinmond's career.
Sophomore Cecilia Borgstrom added to the lead in the 32nd minute when she got behind the Seton Hall defense and put her shot from 15 yards out in the back of the net. Rickan was credited with an assist on the play. The Orange controlled the remainder of the half, but Seton Hall did get off a shot on goal with 15 seconds remaining in regulation, Anghel made the save to give the Orange a 2-0 lead at intermission. It marked the first time Syracuse has led at halftime this season.
Freshman Megan Hunsberger added to the offensive outburst in the 68th minute when she took a long drop kick from Anghel up the left side and blasted a shot from 16 yards out over Pirates' goalkeeper Elizabeth Bond to increase the Orange's advantage to 3-0. The goal is Hunsberger's second of the season, while Anghel recorded her first career assist on the play. Syracuse continued to be the more dangerous team, and junior Tina Romagnuolo tallied the final goal of the night for the Orange when she headed the ball into the back of the net from eight yards out in the 77th minute to give SU a 4-0 lead. The goal is the 16th of Romagnuolo's career, moving her into a three-way tie with Jaime Mingoia (1996-99) and Trisha Burch (1997-00) for fifth place on Syracuse's all-time goals scored list. Hunsberger recorded her first career assist on the goal.
Seton Hall tallied its only goal in the 78th minute. Caitlyn Milazzo passed the ball from the right side to Ashley Beamish, who scored her first goal of the season from six yards out to bring the Pirates to within three. That was as close as Seton Hall would get as Syracuse dominated the remainder of the game on its way to its largest margin of victory this season.
The four goals are the most Syracuse has scored in a game since defeating Binghamton, 4-0, on Sept. 12, 2010 at the SU Soccer Stadium. Hunsberger finished with a career-best three points.
Syracuse outshot Seton Hall, 10-7 and recorded six corner kicks to two for the Pirates. Anghel finished with four saves, while Bond had two.
“I am thrilled with the way Brittany (Anghel) played,” Wheddon said. “She had to deal with a lot of service into the box. She proved again that she is one of the best goalkeepers in the conference.”
The Orange looks to extend its winning streak to three games when it takes on Rutgers in Piscataway, N.J. on Sunday at 1 p.m.
“Playing against these teams is a challenge,” Wheddon said. “Seton Hall was tied for first in National Division. On Sunday we play a tough Rutgers team. We're disappointed that we gave up a goal late in this game. We have to learn from that because that could be the difference in a game. We have to make sure that we are focused for 90 minutes.”
Friday's game is the first of four consecutive road games for the Orange. Syracuse plays only five games at the SU Soccer Stadium this season, which is the least number of home games in program history.
"It was great to see so many Syracuse fans at the game," Wheddon said. "We'd like to say thank you to all of the parents and alumni who came to the game."
