This Week: Two big performances, but only one win. Last Saturday Iasia Hemingway's career high 33 point effort was enough for the Orange to secure a 23 point road win at Pittsburgh. “She stepped up so big for us, it was a great great game by her,” Quentin Hillsman said afterwards.
Wednesday's star turn was isolated to the second half in a 12 point loss to St. John's. Kayla Alexander scored 21 of her game high 22 post halftime, but after trailing by as many as 17 Syracuse never got closer than 4.
“We made some plays to stay in the game and to get back in the game,” Q said. “Most importantly we have to continue to when we get back into games just find a way to make some shots and orchestrate some offense. That was the key, we just didn't really do a very good job of orchestrating enough offense.”
But don't think that at 1-3 in the Big East panic has set in with the either the conductor or orchestra. “I think there's always the ability to get back in it and get back in the groove,” first chair power forward Iasia Hemingway said after Wednesday's loss to St. John's. “It's about 16 teams in the Big East. We still have a lot more games to go. I think we're going to be fine.”
Views from the Road(High Above Pittsburgh Edition): And you thought it was a steel town. This is what Pittsburgh looks like at night. Pretty spectacular. The view from Le Mont's restaurant lining floor to ceiling windows is reasonably similar. Heinz Field and PNC Park sit to the west of the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela and downtown Pittsburgh gleams straight ahead. Notice the address, Grandview Avenue. Appropriately named.
Tastes from the Road(Still High Above Pittsburgh Edition): Le Mont, not named for Gene despite being in Pittsburgh, thankfully also has tasty food to go with the view. Three words: Cajun shrimp sauce. Slather your boot in it and you'd have a good meal. Put in on some grouper and add in the skyline, not a shabby way to spend the evening.
Oh and if you happen to ever eat there and make room for dessert, here's what you order. Get a slice of what can best be described as pound cake infused with raspberry cheesecake. And if the waitress uses the word “infused”(© 2012) to describe it, that's my verbiage. Tell her where you heard it and…well most likely she'll laugh. No promises on free cake.
Higgo's Hero: The Lacrosse Groundhog. I'm pretty sure this is how things work. When the lacrosse groundhog pokes his head up in early January and it feels like mid March, that means it's time to start practice. A perfectly plausible explanation(Bill Murray's a lacrosse fan right?)…that or the season is just 38 days away from Thursday's initial spring(winter) practice for the men's lacrosse team.
With a stacked senior class departed those days will be valuable for John Desko and staff to get this year's squad pointed toward title number 12. “This year with 7/10ths of our starters graduating a year ago and guys like Joel White and Tim Harder at the defensive end of the field almost like two more starters at their positions, we have a new group,” Coach Desko said Thursday between practices one and two of 2012. “It's been a work in progress, but it's been a lot of fun. I'm very excited for the 2012 season. I think our guys are going to get better and better as the year goes on.”
Several scrimmages precede, but the bright lights turn on for real when Albany comes calling on February 19th. Until then Coach Desko will be hard at work preparing to introduce a lot of new names to the college lacrosse world.
The preseason thoughts of Coach, captains Brian Megill and JoJo Marasco, and the early favorite to be the new starting goalie, Matthew Lerman, are available now on Orange All Access.
Next Broadcast: We'll hit the pause button on lax for the moment, because it's time to visit the Hoyas. Syracuse and Georgetown renew women's hoops hostilities at noon Sunday in D.C. The most recent meeting: a one point Orange loss in the 2nd round of the 2011 Big East Tournament that likely kept the Orange out of the NCAA tournament. It's always big doings with the Orange and Hoyas get together so we've got you covered on ESPN 97.7 and Orange All Access. Orange Pregame starts Sunday at 11:45.
Until then, hit me up @BrianHigginsSU.
