NEW YORK - Syracuse has been picked to finish seventh in the BIG EAST in the annual women's basketball preseason coaches' poll, announced at the conference's media day on Thursday at the New York Athletic Club. Senior center Kayla Alexander was named to the preseason All-BIG EAST team.
Coming off a 22-15 season in 2011-12 in which it went 6-10 in BIG EAST play, tied for 10th in the conference, the Orange returns four starters and welcomes a five-member freshmen class ranked sixth-best in the country by ESPN Hoopgurlz.
Connecticut was chosen to finish first in the conference, followed by Notre Dame, Louisville, St. John's, Rutgers, DePaul and the Orange. Georgetown was picked eighth, with USF ninth and Villanova rounding out the top 10.
Alexander was named to the conference's second team last season, was a first-teamer as a sophomore in 2010-11 and was named All-Rookie in 2010-11.
The Milton, Ontario native led the BIG EAST in blocks in 2011-12, setting a Syracuse single-season record with 96, while ranking 10th in scoring (14.8 ppg), ninth in rebounding (7.5 rpg), 14th in field goal percentage (.495) and 12th in free throw percentage (.747).
Alexander enters her senior season with 1,451 career points, the fifth highest total in program history. She is 336 points behind all-time leading scorer Nicole Michael's (2007-10) 1,787 points. Alexander surpassed the 1,000-point mark last Nov. 26 with a career-high 33-point effort at Binghamton, becoming the 21st player in program history to accomplish the feat.
Syracuse opens the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 11 when it hosts Fairleigh Dickinson at the Carrier Dome in a 5 p.m. tip-off.
