The Syracuse women's basketball team set a BIG EAST Conference single game record at Providence, shooting a perfect 23-of-23 from the free-throw line in its 80-54 thrashing of the Friars at Alumni Hall on Tuesday night. The Orange surpassed the 22-for-22 mark set by West Virginia at Boston College on Feb. 27, 2001.
Shakeya Leary led the Orange in its record-breaking effort, shooting 7-of-7 from the line. Kayla Alexander and Iasia Hemingway each hit 6-of-6 free throws, while Rachel Coffey and Elasier Hall both converted their only two free throw attempts.
The national record for free throw percentage in a single-game was set by Kansas (31-of-31) against Nebraska on Feb. 11, 1996.
Syracuse last shot 100 percent from the free throw line at Cincinnati on Feb. 6, 2007 when it knocked down 12-of-12.
The Orange has made 76.1 percent (418-for-549) of its foul shots, leading the BIG EAST in the category. As of Jan. 29, at the time of the last NCAA stats update, the Orange ranked 28th in the nation in free throw percentage (75.1).
Carmen Tyson-Thomas leads the Orange and ranks second in the BIG EAST with a 90.2 free throw percentage. Tyson-Thomas would have the eighth-best free throw percentage in the nation, but falls short of the 2.5 free throws made per game required by the NCAA to qualify. Hemingway's 76.3 free throw percentage is good for second on the team and 11th in the conference.
Syracuse set a program mark with 34 free throws made earlier in the month in its 83-60 victory at Pittsburgh.
The Orange looks to continue its streak of 25 consecutive made free throws when it takes on South Florida at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Carrier Dome.
