NEW ORLEANS – The Syracuse University women's cross country team, which finished 17 at the 2011 NCAA Championships, is one of 205 teams that earned United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic status on Monday.
The Orange women earned selection to the All-Academic squad for the third straight season, and fourth time in the last five seasons. With a team grade point average of 3.47, Syracuse is one of 14 BIG EAST institutions included on the list, the most of any conference in the country.
To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the team must have had a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better and have started at least five runners at their respective NCAA regional championship.
Syracuse had five harriers compete at the NCAA Championships in November, led by Lauren Penney's All-American performance of 20:19, good for a 29th place finish. Also leading the pace for the Orange was junior Sarah Pagano, who earned All-Northeast Regional honors as SU captured its third straight regional crown with an eighth place finish.
The USTFCCCA will announce the men's All-Academic squads on Wednesday.
