Nick Roertgen from the men's track and field team and Carmen Tyson-Thomas from the women's basketball team are the Syracuse University Scholar Athletes of the Week for March 12, 2012.
Roertgen (Smithtown, N.Y.) is a senior majoring in philosophy and television, radio and film. He has been named to the SU Athletic Director's Honor Roll seven times and earned selection to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team in each of the past two seasons.
On the track this season, Roertgen competed in the 5,000-meter run at the Cornell Upstate Challenge, finishing sixth with a time of 15:43.65.
Tyson-Thomas (Philadelphia, Pa.) is a junior majoring in child and family studies. She is a one-time selection to the SU Athletic Director's Honor Roll and was named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team last season.
Tyson-Thomas is third on the team with 10.9 points per game this season, and leads the team with 7.6 rebounds per contest, which ranks eighth in the BIG EAST. Her 3.6 offensive boards per game are also fifth in the conference.
The track team will be off until April 7 when the Orange begins the outdoor season at Stanford, Auburn and Cornell. The women's basketball team will learn its postseason fate on Monday night.
