This Week: Where to begin. The whirlwind of WNITLax season is unrelenting and ever malleable. You know those movies where the lead character is on a train either pensively or wistfully staring out the window? Let's say Tom Cruise in Risky Business. At some point the train goes through a tunnel and light and dark begin rhythmically alternating in the cabin as the main character stares into the distance. Different scenes pop into their head, memories changing in a blink.
That said, let's go over the last week stream of consciousness on a train style. Hartford…fish tacos…men beat Ashville…scoreboard…Rizzotti T'ed…women win…Southwest…Baltimore…Frank Martin…Hopkins…kick save…Syracuse…steamy bus…steamier gym…Rocky steps…Drexel…women win again…cheese steak…Syracuse…Brian Megill...Providence…I-476 deathtrap…Philly again…Carmelo…steamy gym X2…Temple…Kayla Alexander...women win again…Scoop…Elite 8…wiz wit…Philly airport…tarmac. That takes us to right now.
(Though apparently right now a plastic bag has been sucked into the right engine so we're headed back to the gate as a precautionary measure. This day doesn't need Sully take 2. Before the bag announcement a rote rules following pushy flight attendant informed someone in row 5 that perhaps it was their not fully powered off electronic device that was causing interference and thus the delay. Commercial air travel is enough hassle these days without being told your iPod is to blame for the doings of an errant bag. (And no it wasn't me. The laptop was not reopened in row 7 until the light banning electronics was extinguished on the return trip to the gate.))
The movie of the last week is also film noire. The purported main character is lost in thought glancing out the window, but every flash of light reveals a shady fellow donning a trench coat, a fedora and brandishing a knife(Hercule Poirot now on the case). This is what the postseason feels like, at any moment the year could crash to a sudden end.
The city of Syracuse at large is riding the NCAA Tournament's emotional roller coaster along with the men's team. Collective hearts in throats when Jordan Taylor's final 3 hung in the air Thursday night, and stomachs churned as the follow try went wanting. For the women's team the WNIT cannot approximate the mass importance and potential glory of the NCAA Tournament, but thoughts of a season ending in a blink are just as real. Thus the urgency has been no less as the women are also now halfway to their respective tournament title.
For now both teams play on. And regardless of postseason destination Syracuse is one of only seven schools that has both the men's and women's basketball teams with games remaining on the schedule. The logistics(©Geno Auriema) of travel may continue to stretch time and space, but for the right to play on it's a good problem to have.
Higgo's Hero: Cedric Solice. The director of operations for the women's basketball team holds a bevy of responsibilities. None more important at this time of the year than team travel agent. During WNIT season the job takes on an added degree of difficulty. With the NCAA tournament comes the comfort of game sites, dates and times known comparatively well in advance with a small margin of error. The WNIT? It's easy to wake up in the morning not knowing what city the sun will set in(though according to Calvin's dad the answer is Flagstaff and the sun is the size of a quarter, how great was Calvin&Hobbes?). Hotels, buses, flights, meals, practices, for now four straight road games in nine days, Ced's arranged them all with aplomb. For the simple fact we haven't left anyone behind yet, Cedric is this week's hero.
Next Broadcast: If this plane ever gets off the ground we're Detroit bound with a bus awaiting to deliver us to Toledo. Saturday is just one day off a year removed from the Orange's last visit to the Rockets, also for a WNIT quarterfinal matchup. A year ago Toledo rallied from 12 down to nip the Orange 71-68 in OT en route to the WNIT title. Saturday the Rockets will go for their 10th straight WNIT win, all at home, at 2:00. We'll get Orange Pregame cracking for you at 1:45 on ESPN 97.7 and Orange All Access.
Lacrosse retakes the field Sunday for an important Big East matchup against Villanova in the Dome at 2:00. Orange Pregame for that one begins in Syracuse at 1:30 on TK99 and ESPN 97.7 and of course replete with video also on Orange All Access.
Carmen Sandiego aint got nothin on me(save for theme song). Find out where in the world I am @BrianHigginsSU.
