REACHING NEW HEIGHTS
In the midst of Syracuse's three game winning streak, one that includes victories against No. 4 Maryland, No. 3 Florida and No. 18 Towson, the Orange has climbed to No. 2 in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll. It marks Syracuse's highest regular-season ranking in program history. The Orange is also ranked second in the latest deBeer's media poll.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE ORANGE
Syracuse has soared through the month of March, recording three consecutive wins, two against opponents ranked in the top five in the nation. It marks the first time Syracuse has registered two victories against top-five ranked teams since the program began in 1998. Last week, SU defeated No. 18/-- Towson, 18-7.
In the contest, the Tigers jumped out to an early 2-1 lead at the 24 minute mark in the first half. SU then registered a 9-2 scoring run to close the half and took a 10-4 lead into the locker room. Six different players scored during the streak.
The Orange continued an impressive offensive performance in the second period, tallying six straight goals during a 16 minute span to secure the victory. Syracuse finished the game with 18 goals on 23 shots (81.8 percent) versus the nation's leader in goals-against average, Towson goalkeeper Mary Teeters.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
Connecticut brings a 6-1 overall record into the match-up with the Orange. Saturday's contest marks the BIG EAST opener for the Huskies.
UConn began the season with back-to-back home wins versus Iona and Quinnipiac. After its first loss of the season against Boston College, the Huskies rallied and currently are on a four-game winning streak heading into Saturday.
Senior attacker M.E. Lapham leads Connecticut in goals (24), points (32) and shots (54). Lapham ranks second in the BIG EAST in goals per game (3.43) and points per game (4.47), while leading the conference in shots per game (7.71). Lapham notched 55 goals during the 2011 campaign, a Connecticut single-season record.
Kiersten Tupper leads the Huskies' assists effort, registering 10 on the season. Tupper is tied for sixth in the league in assists per game (1.43). Brittney Testa anchors a strong defense that ranks first in the BIG EAST in saves per game and save percentage. Testa ranks first individually in the league in saves per game with 9.43 per contest.
Katie Woods is in her second season at the helm in Storrs, Conn. In her first season with the Huskies, she led UConn to a 9-7 overall record, including a 3-5 mark in the BIG EAST. Woods was previously head coach at American University, where she guided the Eagles to 26 wins over her four year coaching span.
THE SERIES
