This Week: A loss that won't linger. The Syracuse-Virginia lacrosse matchup is the most anticipated early season tilt of the sport every season. Why? The game is always fun. Fun to watch and fun to play in. It's also fun because a loss is not crippling, instead it's a learning event.
“I think this group has the characteristics of a Syracuse lacrosse team,” John Desko said midweek in reflection of Sunday's efforts. “I think we came out with a lot of confidence in a game like this with some newcomers and we competed. It was great that when we did have possessions we got ahead in the second quarter. In the second half even though we got down we still played hard, we played right to the last second.”
Characteristics of Syracuse teams past? So says a five time national champ head coach? Good enough for me. Hopefully we'll revisit Cuse-Cavs in May.
One last nugget on SU-UVA. The loser of this game in the regular season has won three of the last four national championships. Syracuse did so in 2008 and 2009 while Virginia turned the trick last year. In '08 the Orange beat the Cavaliers in double overtime in the Final Four to boot.
Not This Week: More women's basketball. It will be nine days between the last game and learning of the next one. After last Saturday's second round loss to West Virginia in the Big East Tournament the Orange must wait till Monday to learn of their postseason assignment.
The likely destination is a northeast WNIT road trip mid to late next week. Check the home page Monday night in the 11:00PM to midnight region for the bracket. If recent years are any indication the WNIT bracket release is the bastion of night owls.
Sounds of the BET: “More per di-em, clap clap clapclapclap, More per di-em, clap clap clapclapclap.” The scene was this. It was nearly 2:00 Sunday afternoon in Hartford at the XL Center. The first quarterfinal of the women's basketball Big East Tournament about to conclude. And West Virginia was in the process of salting away a “thrilling” 39-32 win over Georgetown by missing 8 straight free throws down the stretch.
But then from the West Virginia pep band a chant arose. “More per di-em, clap clap clapclapclap, More per di-em, clap clap clapclapclap.” The Mountaineers had extended their Big East tournament one more day for both this year and forever, and the band had to eat. Had they just witnessed by far the lowest scoring game in tournament history? Yes. Were they about to get more sweet tax free cash? Also yes.
Tastes from the Road: What I'm not sure is if any Mountaineer put down their trombone, picked up that per diem, and used it to purchase fish tacos. No band members were spotted at Agave and believe you me I had the place staked out. In the past I've recommended their fish tacos should you ever find yourself in Hartford. In the present I shall continue to do just that.
Let's break down the taco's contents: crisply fried fish that remains light and flakey, some shredded lettuce for crunch, a bit of avocado, a few slices of Mandarin orange for a splash of acid, and the coup de grace is a sublime sour cream based sauce that ties the whole thing together. Surround that concoction in a pillowy soft flour tortilla and add in some rice and beans on the side and you've got yourself a meal no matter the time of day.
Can't say I've ever watched the Kevin Spacey flick “Pay It Forward” but I feel I've done my good deed for the week by spreading the gospel of fish tacos around the Big East. Rare was it the souls I encountered in Hartford were not immediately informed where they might snag a bite to eat. And even rarer, those who took the suggestion that were not satisfied.
Higgo's Future Heroes: Syracuse basketball fans moonlighting(daylighting?) as Syracuse lacrosse fans. We know that you can find your way to Madison Square Garden for the Big East Tournament. Conveniently all the remaining games are at night, while the Orange lacrosse squad plays Saturday at 1:00 just a hop, skip and a train away in Queens at St. John's. So why not pull the double? A little hoops tonight in the Garden followed by a lax day trip tomorrow. Heroes you all shall be.
Next Broadcast: We'll be at St. John's for some lacrosse Saturday at 1:00. Syracuse is 12-0 all time in Big East play and opens this year's regular season conference slate with the Red Storm. For the first time this season an automatic bid is on the line in league play. The week before the NCAA playoffs commence the top four in the Big East will convene at Villanova to determine the conference champ. TK99, ESPN 97.7 and Orange All Access have you covered for all the happenings from Queens.
If you're wondering which way Tim Desko will score next, just ask me @BrianHigginsSU.
