SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse field hockey team, as part of its extensive community service work titled “SU Kid's Crew”, is volunteering at Roxboro Elementary School in North Syracuse.
The team is once again working with grades 2-4 once a week for the rest of the spring, leading classes in group activities and lessons, all while providing mentoring and positive influences on the students.
“Recent times have taught me that leadership must be practiced, massaged and revisited often to develop effectively within our Syracuse field hockey program,” Head Coach Ange Bradley said. “Leadership encompasses so many things yet at the most elementary level it is our ability to influence others. The partnership that we have developed with Roxboro Elementary School provides us the ability to influence others, thus practicing some of the many skills required to lead.”
On Monday, the Orange led the class in an arts and crafts project in which they made bracelets – which were of course orange and blue!
“Working with the kids is a great way for our team to give back to the community that we strive to represent on and off the field,” junior Kelsey Millman said. “It helps us learn from each other and bond as a team as well.”
Each week a student-athlete is in charge of developing the week's plan and relating it to something in her field of study. For example, Anna Crumb, a science major, taught the students how to make silly putty on her day.
The activities at Roxboro Elementary are a part of Bradley's extensive program of community outreach and making the Orange student-athletes active and positive members of the Syracuse community.
“SU Kid's Crew is a fabulous partnership,” Bradley said. “I am so appreciative of the time and dedication Roxboro physical education teacher Colleen Wickert and guidance counselor Rosanne Parlin have given us to make this service project possible. It has been an extremely positive experience for all parties involved and has given us many memories away from the field.”
