Canada Basketball Release | Alexander's Team Canada Bio
TORONTO - Syracuse center Kayla Alexander is one of 25 players Canada Basketball has extended an invitation to for the 2012 Canadian Senior Women's National Team Tryout. The two-time All-BIG EAST selection will attend the training camp later this month in hopes of making Team Canada and qualifying for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Alexander has long been a part of the Canadian National Team system. She was a member of the Junior National Team in 2008, representing Canada at the FIBA Americas U18 Tournament, and competed at the U19 World Championships in Thailand in 2009, averaging 11.3 points and 11.3 rebounds per game. The 6-4 center has played a total of 14 international games.
Prior to her National Team experience, the Milton, Ontario native represented Ontario at the U15 National Championships in 2005 and U17 National Championships in 2006 and 2008.
Alexander continued on her way to cementing her names as one of the legendary players in Syracuse women's basketball history in 2011-12. The junior averaged 14.8 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game for head coach Quentin Hillsman's Orange on the way to a 22-win season. She scored in double figures in 28 of 37 games and recorded 11 double-doubles. Alexander broke her own single-season blocks record with 96, leading the BIG EAST and ranking eighth nationally.
Alexander was named both preseason and postseason All-BIG EAST and was named to the WNIT All-Tournament team. She eclipsed the 1,000-point mark early in the season and will begin her senior campaign with 1,451 points, fifth-most in program history and on pace to break the SU career record.
Alexander is one of five invitees that played for NCAA teams in 2011-12 and one of three out of the BIG EAST, joining Notre Dame's Natalie Achonwa and Marquette's Katherine Plouffe, as well as Utah's Michelle Plouffe and Taryn Wicijowski.
Among the invitees are eight players from Canada's 11th place team from the 2010 World Championships. Team Canada finished third in the last year's FIBA Americas Olympic Qualifier, qualifying the team for the final World Olympic Qualifier.
The 16 players that make the Senior National Team will compete at the FIBA World Olympic Qualifier in Turkey on June 25-July 1.
Seven countries have already punched their tickets to the Olympics in London, while five spots remain open.
Prior to the qualifier, Team Canada will play against China as part of the 2012 Jack Donohue International Classic, which will take place in Langley, Richmond and Abbotsford, B.C.
