HAMILTON, N.Y. – Syracuse volleyball defeated Illinois-Chicago 3-2 (25-13, 24-25, 18-25, 25-21, 15-9) in the Colgate Classic, putting the Orange out to a 1-0 start in 2012. Nicolette Serratore, Samantha Clarey and Melina Violas all led the team with career-high performances in the victory over the Red Flames
Serratore and Clarey led the offensive attack, guiding the Orange to an easy 25-13 win in the first set, combining for seven kills on 11 attempts. Freshman Monika Salkute tallied three block assists and one block solo in the first frame of her collegiate debut.
"We still don't know exactly who we are yet, but it's good to find out and work on these things out when we are still winning," Yelin said.
SU battled hard in the second set and third sets, but could not hold off UIC, dropping both sets and putting the Flames up 2-1. The Orange regained momentum in the fourth set, after Melina Violas entered the match in the libero position. Violas recorded 8 digs in the fourth set, finishing with a career-high 16 digs.
Back on track, the Orange jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the fifth set, before ultimately taking the match 15-9. Serratore finished off the fifth set with a career-high 21 kills, while Lindsay McCabe and Clarey also finished with double digit kills.
Syracuse is back in action tomorrow with two matches, taking on Bryant at 10 a.m. and Colgate at 7:30 p.m.
