
Orange Capture Colgate Classic Title

The Orange volleyball squad is off to a perfect 3-0 start in 2012, with first year head coach Leonid Yelin at the helm of the team. Syracuse swept all three matches this weekend, capturing the Colgate Classic title after defeating Bryant and Colgate in the final day of the tournament.
Andrea Fisher and Samantha Clarey both led the Orange in the first match of the day, defeating Bryant 3-1 (21-25, 26-25, 25-14, 25-21). Clarey led the team with a career-high 18 kills, while Fisher and Nicolette Serratore combined for 29 total kills.
As a team, the Orange got out to a slow start, hitting at a .114 clip in the first set, falling to Bryant 21-25. Lindsay McCabe and Clarey led the defense with two block assists and two block solos each.
With the game tied at 24 in the second set, Claire Van Dyk's ace put Bryant up 25-24. Van Dyk led the Bulldog offensive with 14 kills. Denying Bryant the win, Clarey helped the Orange with a kill and an ace, securing a 26-24 win in the second set.
Syracuse rallied in the third and fourth sets, ending the match with a 3-1 victory over the Bulldogs.
In Syracuse's second match of the day, the Orange defeated Colgate 3-1 (25-20, 26-28, 25-19, 25-19) for the title.
"It's always good to be able to go 3-0 heading into some tough weekends and we gained some really good game expereince this weekend," assistant coach Stephanie Cantway said.
Fisher tied her career-high mark with 18 kills, adding 13 digs. Serratore tallied 16 kills, while Clarey was just one kill shy of double digit kills, adding nine.
Lindsay Young led the Raiders with 20 kills, but SU was able to capitalize on 28 attacking errors by Colgate.
Senior Samantha Hinz helped out the defense with four blocks and one block solo, while McCabe added six blocks. Melina Violas tied her career-record with 16 digs.
The Orange will head to Omaha, Neb. next weekend to take on tournament host Creighton, in the Bluejay Invitational on Friday, August 31 at 6 p.m. EST.
