SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse allowed a pair of second half goals in a 2-1 setback to Washington on Sunday, Aug. 26 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange goes to 1-1-1 on the season, while the Huskies improve to 3-0.
Syracuse controlled the first half, outshooting Washington, 7-2. Junior Cecilia Borgstrom had a pair of scoring chances in the first seven minutes of the game. Her first shot was knocked over the crossbar by the Huskies' Kari Davidson while her second shot went off the post. Sophomore Alexis Koval put the Orange on the scoreboard in the 26th minute. Sophomore Hanna Strong served the ball into the left side of the box to Koval, who put her shot in the back of the net for her team-leading third goal of the season. It was the first goal Washington has allowed this season.
The Huskies tied the game in the 62nd minute off a restart. Lindsay Elston served the ball to left side of the box to Jaclyn Softli. Softli passed it to Stine Schoening, who put her shot past SU goalkeeper Brittany Anghel for the equalizer.
The score remained tied until the 73rd minute when Elston took the ball on the right side and served it across the box to Isabel Farrell, who recorded the game-winning goal.
"We battled," head coach Phil Wheddon said of his team, which was coming off a double-overtime game on Friday. "I thought our defenders were fantastic, for the most part, throughout the whole game, especially Rachel (Blum) and Jackie (Moriarty) in the back. We are a young team, we're growing. We come away from this game with confidence. Hopefully we can learn from this, be more disciplined in our marking and come away two wins next week."
Syracuse recorded 11 shots to five for Washington, and recorded four corner kicks to the Huskies' three. Anghel finished with two saves, while Davidson had five.
The Orange hits the road for a pair of games next weekend. Syracuse plays at St. Bonaventure on Friday, Aug. 31 at 5 p.m. and at Ohio State on Sunday, Sept. 2 at 6 p.m.
