OLEAN, N.Y. – Syracuse remained unbeaten on the road with a 2-0 victory at St. Bonaventure on Friday, Aug. 31 in Olean, N.Y. The win snaps a two-game winless streak for the Orange as it improves to 2-1-1 on the season, while the Bonnies go to 0-4-1.
"This was a great road win under difficult conditions," said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. "It's a great step for the team."
Junior goalkeeper Brittany Anghel recorded two saves, posting her first shutout of the season and the 14th of her career. She moves into a three-way tie for second place on Syracuse's career shutouts leader list with Shannon Myers (2001-04) and Katie Karlander (1999-00). Eliza Bennett-Hattan (2006-09) holds the record with 20 career shutouts.
A pair of freshmen connected in the 37th minute to give the Orange a 1-0 lead. Taylor Haenlin threw the ball in from the sideline into the box to Kari Quinn, who headed it into the far left corner of the net for her first career goal. It was also Haenlin's first career assist. The Orange outshot the Bonnies, 9-3, and earned two corner kicks in the first half
"The conditions were difficult with the high temperatures and a strong wind," Wheddon said. "Going against the wind in the first half made it difficult to keep possession. In the second half we played more direct and used our speed up top and created a lot of scoring opportunities. I'm proud of the team for not wasting their opportunities and making the (St. Bonaventure) goalkeeper do her job."
Syracuse increased its lead in the 58th minute when sophomore Hanna Strong scored on a shot from the top of the box into the right side of the net. Strong has now recorded a point in three consecutive games and ranks second on the team in scoring with five points.
"I challenged the midfield to join the attack and Hanna stepped up and made a great run into the box," Wheddon said.
The Orange was the more dangerous team the entire match, outshooting the Bonnies, 17-5. SU earned five corner kicks to one for St. Bonaventure. Christina Sarokon recorded 11 saves for the Bonnies.
"It was a physical game," Wheddon said. "I give credit to our team. They made the changes and fought and battled for each other."
Syracuse continues its road trip on Sunday when it plays at Ohio State at 6 p.m.
