Harry Lang Preview
The Syracuse cross country team will compete in the Harry Lang Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 1st in its opening meet of the season. The meet is hosted by Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y. with the women slated to run the 4200m at 11:30 a.m. and the men to run the 6400m at noon.
"Everybody came back in really, really good shape and really, really healthy," head coach Chris Fox said. "I think we have a couple of minor injuries but even those people are coming back. We're really pleased. We're in a good spot for just about September 1st."

Returning Runners
- On the men's side, two All-Northeast Region honorees, junior Joseph Whelan and senior Forrest Misenti, are back for the Orange.
- Four returning men competed in the 2011 NCAA championships. Whelan is the top returner from the NCAA after he ran to a 108th finish with a time of 30:51. Max Straneva (129th; 31:01), Forest Misenti (150th; 31:11), and Andrew Palmer (217th; 32:03) were the other Orange competitors in the NCAA Championship that are back for 2012.
- Sophomore Jace Lowry, returns to the course after winning both the the 2012 USA Cross Country Championship and the 2012 NACAC Championship in the offseason.
- The SU women return three harriers that competed in the 2011 NCAA championships, helping Syracuse to its 17th place finish. Senior Sarah Pagano is the top-returner on the women's side after finishing 73rd overall at the NCAA championship race with a time of 20:49. Sophomore Shaylyn Tuite completed the national race in 21:27 (162nd) while fellow sophomore Jessie Peterson completed the course in 22:10 (226th).
- Pagano and Tuite were both All-Northeast Region honorees as well.
Fresh New Faces
- The women welcome six newcomers to the team this season with freshmen Karina Ernst, Margo Malone, Brianna Nerud, Emily Nist, and Meredith Speakman and sophomore Katherine Fleischer.
- There are four freshmen on the men's squad this season. The freshmen for the men are Corey Dowling, MJ Erb, Joel Hubbard and Daniel Lennon.
- The coaching staff also had am addition this season with a new assistant coach Adam Smith.
SU in the Polls
- The women's team broke into the top-10 of the 2012 USTFCCA Preseason National Poll with a No. 9 ranking, receiving 246 votes
- The men were ranked at No. 12 in the preseason poll after receiving 216 votes
- In the regional rankings, the women were ranked at the No. 1 spot of the Northeast Regional bracket
- The men were placed at the No. 2 spot following Iona in the Northeast Preseason Regional rankings
- Both the men and the women captured the Northeast Regional title for the third consecutive season in 2011
