SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Alyscha Mottershead scored in the second overtime period to give the Syracuse women's soccer team a 1-0 victory against Rutgers on Sunday, Sept. 30 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange, which extended its winning streak to three, improved its record to 7-4-2 and matched its win total from a year ago.
Syracuse remains in second place in the BIG EAST's American Division with a 4-1-1 conference mark. The Orange trails only Marquette , which is 5-0 in league play. With just four regular-season BIG EAST games remaining, Syracuse is looking to improve on its third-place finish in the division in 2011.
"We're competing well in the BIG EAST," said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. "Every BIG EAST is a tough game. We're excited to be where we are."
Mottershead's goal came in the 102nd minute of play. Senior Jenna Rickan crossed the ball to Mottershead, who was on the right side. She put her shot from just outside the box into the left side of the goal for her second game-winning goal in overtime this season.
"We've been working really well together the past couple of games," Mottershead said of her play with Rickan. "She went out there and gave me a great ball in order for me to have that shot."
Syracuse was the more dangerous team throughout the game, which was played in a steady rain. The Orange outshot Rutgers (8-6, 1-5), 16-8, which included a 4-0 advantage in the overtime periods. SU earned four corner kicks to one for Rutgers.
Junior Brittany Anghel recorded five saves and posted her third shutout of the season and 16th of her career. She now trails Eliza Bennett-Hattan by four for the top spot on Syracuse's career shutouts leader list. Emmy Simpkins made nine saves for Rutgers.
Syracuse closes out its three-game homestand on Thursday when it hosts Pittsburgh at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium.
