TAMPA – The No. 72 Orange tennis team lost is opening match of the 2013 campaign on the road in a 6-1 decision against No. 43 South Florida at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
Looking to erase the deficit from the doubles matches, Maddie Kobelt led the team with the only Syracuse victory, as she defeated the No. 75 ranked singles player, Loreto Alonso Martinez by a score of 6-1, 6-2 on court two. The triumph marks Kobelt's first win against a ranked opponent in her career at SU.
Looking to continue the momentum, sophomore Jimena Wu lost a hard fought match on court four against Paula Montoya by a score of 6-1, 5-7, 11-4. Sophia Dzulynsky almost clinched a victory in her first-ever collegiate match, but fell to Allessandra Bonte on court six the scores 6-7, 6-4 and 15-13.
Syracuse will be back in action next weekend, traveling to Georgia Tech to face the Hornets on Thursday, Jan. 17th before meeting Georgia State on Saturday, Jan. 19th in Atlanta.
