CLEMSON, S.C. - Despite double-doubles from sophomore Silvi Uattara and junior Nicolette Serratore, Syracuse fell at Clemson 3-1 in an Atlantic Coast Conference match on Friday, Nov. 22.
The Orange (14-15, 9-8 ACC) dropped the first two sets before bouncing back to take the third. Clemson (14-14, 8-9 ACC) held off a late SU rally to secure the win. The loss was just Syracuse's fourth in the last 13 matches, a stretch that included a 3-1 home win against Clemson back on Oct. 27.
"Even the game we won - the sets we started getting close, like the second and fourth game, we were never really in the game," said head coach Leonid Yelin. "We will see how we recover and try our best on Sunday."
Uattara finished with a team-best 18 kills to go along with a season-high 14 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Serratore posted her eighth double-double of the campaign with 14 kills and 12 digs.
Freshman Erica Handley passed out 29 assists and added seven digs. Defensively, the Orange was led by 15 digs from junior Melina Violas and five blocks from redshirt junior Lindsay McCabe.
After Syracuse jumped out to a 4-2 lead to begin the first set, Clemson rattled off the next 11 points to go up 13-4 and never looked back. The Tigers held their largest margin at 20-9 and got a kill from Irem Bayramoglu to close out the set with a .306 attack percentage.
Clemson picked up right where it left off scoring the first six points in the second set. The Orange rallied to tie the set at 15-15 and grabbed its first advantage at 17-16. The remainder of the frame saw eight ties and four lead changes - the last coming in the midst of the three-point run to give the hosts a 25-23 win.
Syracuse used an early 11-4 run in the third set to go ahead 11-5 and stayed in front the rest of the way. Clemson closed the gap to 14-12, but SU responded by outscoring the Tigers 4-1 to push its lead back to 18-13. The teams traded sideouts on the next 11 serves bringing the score to 23-19 in favor of the Orange. Sophomore Gosia Wlaszczuk capped the set with a kill to extend the match as Syracuse finished with a .333 hitting percentage.
The Tigers never trailed in the fourth set, but SU kept it close and fought to the very end. With a 12-10 lead, Clemson went on a 9-3 spurt for its largest advantage at 21-13. Syracuse tallied seven of nine to get within 23-20, but a kill by Kristin Faust gave the Tigers match point. Three straight Uattara kills brought the Orange within one at 24-23, however Mo Simmons smacked her game-high 19th kill to end the set and the match.
Simmons also contributed 12 digs for a double-double. Leah Perri and Karis Watson both reached double-digit kills with 12. Hannah Brenner dished out a match-high 51 assists and Bayramoglu led all players with 17 digs.
