SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's volleyball team will conclude its home portion of the 2013 season by welcoming Boston College to the Women's Building on Wednesday, Nov. 27 at 1 p.m.
LAST WEEK:
The Orange (14-16, 9-9 ACC) was swept last weekend, suffering a four set loss at Clemson and five-setter at Georgia Tech. The setback against the Yellow Jackets was the first five-game loss since Sept. 21 and just the second time SU has dropped a match this season when out-hitting an opponent. Silvi Uattara and Nicolette Serratore posted double-doubles in each match over the weekend, bringing their season totals to seven and nine, respectively.
SCOUTING BOSTON COLLEGE:
The Eagles (9-21, 1-17 ACC) snapped a 16-match losing streak on Nov. 15 by sweeping Maryland in straight sets for their first conference win of the season. Boston College has dropped three since the win and now sits at 9-21 overall and 1-17 in the ACC. Outside hitter Katty Workman recorded her 12th double-double of the season last weekend and ranks sixth in the ACC with 3.68 kills per set. Setting up Workman is Kellie Barnum, who is eighth in the conference with 8.97 assists per set. Melissa McTighe is the most efficient hitter on the squad with a .283 attack percentage and is also the top blocker with 0.90 blocks per set.
HANDLEY PASSES HER WAY INTO THE RECORD BOOKS:
With 70 assists last weekend, two-time Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Week Erica Handley slid into 10th all-time in program history with 1,001 career assists. Handley is within striking distance of ninth place, needing just 75 assists over the next two matches to move up another spot.
BUILDING BLOCKS:
Redshirt junior Lindsay McCabe's 143 total blocks, 126 block assists and 17 solo blocks in 2013 has propelled her into the program's top-10 all-time list for all three categories. She is sixth all-time with 434 career blocks and 372 career block assists, and tied for 10th with 62 solo blocks. The 434 career blocks are also 23rd among active Division I players. McCabe's 126 block assists this year also ranks eighth in a single-season at SU. For the season, the redshirt junior is averaging 1.29 blocks per set, which ranks 45th in the nation and fourth-best in the ACC. In conference-play, McCabe's 1.42 blocks per set is second among individuals.
SERIES HISTORY:
All-time, Syracuse is 21-6 against former-BIG EAST Conference foe Boston College. The two teams met every year from 1982 to 2005, with the first 25 matches coming in conference play. SU won the first 10 meetings, which included three victories apiece in the 1984 and 1986 seasons. After BC took both contests in 1987, the Orange went on to win 12 of the next 13. Syracuse has won the last three meeting, including this year's tilt, a 3-2 triumph on Nov. 10. Trailing 14-10 in the fifth set, Syracuse fended off five match points and scored eight of the last 10 to claim the match. Nicolette Serratore notched her seventh double-double of the season with 11 kills and 14 digs
