SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse begins its first season of play in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) this weekend with a pair of road matches. The Orange takes on No. 2 Virginia on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. and Virginia Tech on Sunday, Sept. 15 at noon.
Syracuse had its three-game winning streak snapped at Connecticut on Sunday and is now 4-2 this season. Virginia enters Thursday's game with three consecutive shutouts and a 6-0-0 mark. The Hokies, which take on No. 1 North Carolina on Thursday, are 5-0-1 this season.
THE SERIES
Syracuse and Virginia will meet for the second time on Thursday. The Cavaliers defeated the Orange, 6-0, in the 2006 season opener. SU will have the chance to renew its series with Virginia Tech. The last time the two teams competed against each other was 2003. SU currently leads the series 2-1-0. All three competitions have been tight battles as each game has been decided by one goal and two have gone into overtime.
ORANGE AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS
The Orange will take on its highest-ranked opponent since 2010 when it takes the field against Virginia on Thursday. The Cavaliers are ranked No. 2 in both the NSCAA and Soccer America polls. The last time Syracuse faced a team ranked in the top five was in 2010 when it took on No. 4 Portland in the Husky/NIKE Invitational hosted by the University of Washington. The Pilots defeated SU, 3-1.
Earlier this season Syracuse faced West Virginia, which was receiving votes in the coaches' poll and was ranked No. 19 in the Soccer America poll. The Mountaineers scored with less than three minutes remaining and defeated the Orange, 2-1.

Syracuse will play its fifth consecutive road game on Thursday, Sept. 19 at Notre Dame before returning home to host Duke on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 12 p.m.
