SYRACUSE, N.Y- Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Bono (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) of the men's soccer team and redshirt junior Lindsay McCabe (Georgetown, Ontario), a middle blocker on the volleyball team, are the Syracuse University Scholar-Athletes of the Week for Sept. 2, 2013.
Bono and the men's soccer team kicked off the 2013 season with a 4-0 win over Colgate on Aug. 30, with Bono recording the 11th shutout of his young career. In 2012, he started all but one game in goal for the Orange as a freshman and posted a 13-6-1 record. Bono yielded a 0.85 goals against average in helping SU reach the NCAA tournament for just the second time in program history and advance to the Sweet 16. Following the season, he received freshman All-America honors from College Soccer News (first team), Soccer America (second team) and TopDrawerSoccer.com (second team), while being voted to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team. Bono is majoring in broadcast and digital journalism in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.
McCabe, who made her return to the court over the weekend after being sidelined with a season-ending injury only 10 matches into the 2012 campaign, totaled five kills and four block assists at the Penn State Invitational. The Orange's single-season record holder in hitting percentage was a 2012 All-BIG EAST Preseason Team selection before going down to injury and was a Second Team All-BIG EAST honoree in 2011. McCabe, a team captain, is double majoring in math and biology in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Bono and the Orange (1-0) host Hartwick for their home-opener on Monday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. before kicking off the ACC slate at Virginia Tech on Friday, Sept. 6. McCabe and the volleyball squad (0-2) are hosting the Candlewood Suites Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 6 and 7, with their first home contest scheduled for Friday at 2:30 p.m. against Stony Brook at the Women's Building.
