SU out-hit and out-blocked the Demon Deacons to take the match in three sets
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse executed in every phase of the match Sunday afternoon to defeat the Demon Deacons, 3-0.
Salkute led the Orange (8-12, 1-7 ACC) to its best hitting percentage of ACC play against the Demon Deacons (12-9, 2-5 ACC).
Syracuse Set-By-Set
Syracuse corralled the first three points of the match thanks to an attack error by Wake Forest and kills by Lindsay McCabe and Gosia Wlaszczuk. The Orange quickly expanded its lead to 7-3 after a kill by Silvi Uattara.
The Demon Deacons hung around until a three-point burst powered by back-to-back block assists by Uattara and Leah Levert gave SU a 17-11 lead and forcing a Wake Forest timeout. The Demon Deacons surged out of the break with a 7-3 run to pull within two of SU.
Wake Forest and Syracuse traded blows until Monika Salkute finished off the first set with a kill assisted by Wlaszczuk, winning the opening stanza, 25-23.
Neither team was able to take control of the second set until Salkute, Levert and Uattara contributed with kills on a 5-0 run to give SU the 18-14 lead. From there it was smooth sailing as 'Cuse took seven of the next 11 points to win the set, 25-18.
The Demon Deacons refused to quit, starting off the third stanza with five straight points that included three consecutive aces by Matalee Reed. Syracuse battled to tie the set four times until it was able to capture the lead with four straight points that included two kills by Salkute to take a 20-17 lead.
Once in control of the lead and victory in sight, SU closed out the final frame with consecutive kills by Salkute, Wlaszczuk and Uattara to win match with a final score of 25-19 in the third set.
Firing On All Cylinders
Syracuse made a statement in the first set, converting on nearly 52% of its attack attempts and went on to finish the match with a .333 hitting percentage. Contributing to the percentage was near-perfect, McCabe who recorded eight kills on 10 attempts with just one error.
She was behind Uattara and Salkute in kills with Salkute leading SU with 14 and Uattara finishing with nine. The Demon Deacons struggled to anticipate Wlaszczuk's next move as the dual-threat setter picked up five kills to go along with her 30 assists.
In her first match after missing three to with an upper body injury, Levert led the Orange assisting on six blocks to go along with her two kills. Uattara, McCabe and Wlaszczuk all picked up three block assists while Stacey Smith and Salkute combined for three.
Salkute led the Orange in digs as well with 11 while the next most digs were credited to the libero, Belle Sand. Uattara wasn't far behind with seven digs on the day.
Holding The Demon Deacons At Bay
After allowing Wake to convert on 30% of its attack attempts, the SU defense shut down the Demon Deacons. Wake Forest struggled to record a .106 hitting percentage in the second set and a .026 percentage in the third.
The Demon Deacons were forced to use Reed and Jazmen Russell for the majority of its offense as Russell recorded a match-high 17 kills while Reed finished with 10 to go along with her three service aces. Next in line was Brianna Lynch who record six kills.
Wake Forest swapped between two setters as Danae Rosendall and Sophia Dodd accounted for 33 assists. Rosendall had the team lead with 23. The libero, Caroline Wolf was peppered throughout the match but held strong to record 14 of the team's 35 digs.
Reed and Hanna Lee led the way on the block accounting for four of Wake Forest's eight block assists.
Heading South
On Friday, October 24 at 8:30 PM the Orange will be featured on ESPN3 in its match against Georgia Tech. The match is Syracuse's only match of the weekend before it seeks revenge on the road against Louisville and Pittsburgh the following weekend.
