The Boston College Eagles out-fought the Syracuse Orange in a four set grind on Sunday
SYRACUSE, NY – Syracuse fell short of Boston College in a four set grind with three of the sets decided four points or less. A back-and-forth contest including 22 ties and seven lead changes throughout resulted in a 3-1 loss with sets decided 21-25, 25-23, 22-25 and 15-25.
'Cuse By The Numbers
Monika Salkute's double-double wasn't enough at times to give Syracuse the boost it needed. The recently converted hitter finished with a team leading 12 kills and 12 digs. The most effective attacker for the Orange was once again Lindsay McCabe. The redshirt senior finished with 10 kills on 16 attempts with just one error for a .562 hitting percentage.
Silvi Uattara and Stacey Smith each finished with five kills while Leah Levert and Gosia Wlaszczuk added four kills apiece. Wlaszczuk fed the offense once again, tallying 26 assists.
Belle Sand was on the receiving end of the Eagles' attack as the libero of the Orange and turned in her best performance yet. The freshman recorded the first 20-dig match of her career and added four assists. Uattara also finished with double-digit digs, recording 11.
The 'Cuse block was working as McCabe and Wlaszczuk denied six and five attacks respectively. Levert added four and Uattara rejected the Eagles on three attacks.
How It Happened
Trading point-for-point in the first set, it appeared neither team was going to pull away to take the set. Following a kill by Smith to tie the opening set at 17, BC strung together three consecutive points to give it the distance it needed to finish off the Orange. After the short burst, the two contenders traded points until the Eagles won the set, 25-21.
The ensuing stanza was much of the same as both teams were locked up most of the second, until Syracuse fired off a 6-1 run with the score tied at 13 to give the Orange a 19-13 lead.
Boston College refused to go down quietly as it then responded with a 7-1 run of its own to tie the set at 20. Despite the surge, the Orange was able to win five of the next eight points in order to take the second, 25-23.
Once again a tight set in the third, the Orange fought its way back late to cut the lead to one as it trailed the Eagles, 19-18. Boston College responded with two straight in order to attain the distance it needed to trade points until ultimately taking the set, 25-22.
The fourth set was a different story as Boston College was unwilling to weather the stress of another tight set. The Eagles powered out on a 12-3 run to take a, 18-9 lead in the fourth. Syracuse was unable to overcome the deficit, dropping the set, 25-15.
One Last Road Trip
Syracuse takes its final road trip of the season this weekend as it heads for warmer weather, taking on Miami in a rematch on Friday night at 7:00 PM.
Sunday marks Syracuse's toughest test of the season as No. 2 Florida State awaits the Orange for a 1:00 PM matchup in Tallahassee, Fl.
