UUNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Syracuse takes to the pitch for the first time this season when the Orange takes on Missouri on Friday, Aug. 22 at 5 p.m. The contest is the first game of the Penn State Invitational in University Park, Pa. Syracuse takes on the host Nittany Lions on Sunday, Aug. 24 at 2:30 p.m.
ORANGE IN SEASON OPENERS
Syracuse opens its 19th season on Friday, Aug. 23 against Missouri. The Orange is 10-6-2 in season openers. SU is looking for its third consecutive victory in the first game of the season. Since head coach Phil Wheddon took over the helm of the Syracuse program, the Orange is 3-3 in season openers.
CUSE RETURNS LEADING SCORERS
Syracuse's top seven scorers from a year ago return this season. The Orange recorded 66 points in 2013, which is the eighth-highest total in school history. In addition, SU dished out 18 assists, which is also the eighth-highest total since the program began in 1996.
SCOUTING MISSOURI
Missouri finished the 2013 season with an overall record of 8-9-3 and a 4-4-3 mark in conference play. Three Tigers were voted to the SEC Coaches' Preseason Watch List. The group included senior midfielder Kaysie Clark, junior midfielder Candace Johnson and sophomore midfielder Melanie Donaldson. Missouri defeated North Carolina, 2-1, in its only exhibition game.
SCOUTING PENN STATE
Penn State posted a record of 15-7-1 last season and made its 19th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Penn State is ranked No. 24 in the preseason NSCAA poll and No. 9 in the preseason Soccer America poll. In addition, the Nittany Lions were picked to win the Big Ten title in a vote by the coaches. Senior Emily Hurd and juniors Mallory Weber and Raquel Rodriguez represented the Nittany Lions on the Big Ten Preseason Players to Watch List.
SERIES HISTORY
Syracuse will be facing Missouri and Penn State for the first time in program history this weekend.
