Syracuse moves to 8-0 in season openers under Ange Bradley
Box Score
It took until overtime, but junior forward Emma Russell sent the Orange into the win column by burying a rebound in the team's season opener Friday.
The Orange earned a 3-2 victory at Ohio State, after Russell found the back of the cage just under seven minutes into the extra period.
"We made a sub in overtime and brought Emma [Russell] on and she pressured the ball," said head coach Ange Bradley. "She had fresh legs and forced a turnover and ran with the ball for about 40 yards. We got a shot off and the rebound came to the opposite side and Emma was able to score off it. It was a really nice goal."
The Orange jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the contest, with senior back Jordan Page netted the opening goal of the 2014 season for the Orange 33 minutes into the contest. Page capitalized on a Buckeye mistake, scoring on a turnover from five yards out.
Just over five minutes later, junior midfielder Alyssa Manley tacked on another goal to give 'Cuse a two-goal lead. Manley went top-shelf on Ohio State net minder Liz Tamburro, scoring in the top-right corner from seven yards out.
Syracuse peppered Tamburro throughout the game, especially in the first half. She made 11 saves in the game, five of which came prior to halftime.
The Buckeyes would rally though, as Kaitlyn Wagner cut the Orange lead to one at 44:35 and Peanut Johnson tied it up just under nine minutes later.
Ohio State wouldn't get a shot the rest of the way however, as the Orange locked down defensively, holding the Buckeyes to just four total shots in the game.
'Cuse will have a quick turnaround, squaring off with Miami (OH) at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
"We just have to keep focusing on getting better," Bradley said. "I'm happy with the character this team showed to get an overtime win."
GAME NOTES: Syracuse moved to 8-0 in season openers under head coach Ange Bradley … Syracuse is 15-4 since 1996 in season debuts and 28-15 overall … Page's goal was her first goal since the 2012 NCAA Tournament Quarterfinal win over Penn State, going 21 games in between
