Men win, women take second at NCAA Northeast Regional
Both the No. 2 men's and No. 19 women's cross country teams easily qualified for next week's NCAA Cross Country Championship behind the men's third-straight NCAA Northeast Regional Championship, while the women took second.
The men cruised to a victory on the Franklin Park course in Boston, Mass., which was the site of the program's first regional title in 2009, by placing seven runners in the top-19 and collecting 29 points.
The Orange swept the podium with Justyn Knight winning the individual title in 30:29.5, with teammates Colin Bennie and Martin Hehir on his heels in second and third respectively.
Joel Hubbard (11th/30:51.2) and Dan Lennon (12th/30:51.6) rounded out the Orange scoring, with Philo Germano (15th) and Shawn Wilson (19th) also earning USTFCCCA All-Northeast Region honors by finishing in the top-25.
On the women's side, the team collected 94 points and improved its finish two spots from last year's fourth-place finish. Margo Malone led the way once again for the Orange, taking eighth overall in a time of 20:49.0, 24 seconds behind Dana Giordano of Dartmouth, who won the race.
Syracuse placed three other runners in the top-20, with Shaylyn Tuite (12th/21:02), Sydney Leiher (21:06/15th) and Cassia Hameline (20th/21:16) following closely behind Malone and earning All-Northeast Region accolades for their performance (top-25).
Rebecca Skodis rounded out the scoring for the Orange after taking 37th overall in a time of 21:44.
Next up, Syracuse will take on the NCAA Championship in Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday, Nov. 21.
