The duo combined for 32 points at Tennessee
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The 2015-16 Syracuse University women's basketball is certainly not short on talent. Junior guard Alexis Peterson and redshirt junior guard Brittney Sykes displayed the ability to be one of the elite guard tandems nationally on Nov. 20 at Tennessee.
Â
The two combined for 32 points at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tenn. on Friday night. Peterson and Sykes were responsible for more than 58 percent of the team's total scoring output. Ultimately, their efforts fell short in a 57-55 loss, but that should not diminish their performances on the court.
Â
Peterson led the club in scoring at Tennessee, scoring 19 points on the night. She was an efficient 7-of-12 shooting from the floor. It marked the 16th time in her collegiate career that paced the squad in scoring.
Â
"Peterson was very efficient," head coach Quentin Hillsman stated. "She put on a great shooting night, 7-for-12. That's what you want from her, to be very efficient with the ball. She played well."
Â
Sykes was the team's second-leading scorer at Tennessee, finishing with 13 points. The redshirt junior guard scored seven points in the final 20 minutes of play. She also made one of the most crucial plays of the game, registering a steal in the final seconds of the contest.
Â
"There is no question, she played well," added Hillsman.
Â
Peterson emerged as the team's top scoring threat last season, filling the void created by Sykes' season-ending injury. Two years ago, it was Sykes who was the team's top scorer. Now, the two are playing together and it appears that the possibilities could be endless.
Â
In its next contest, the Orange will host Morgan State in its home opener on Monday, Nov. 23. Tipoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. Syracuse will host a Thanksgiving Celebration that night. Fans who bring a canned food item will receive a $5 voucher to a future contest.
