DURHAM, N.C. – Junior Kayla Treanor scored three goals to lead No. 7/6 Syracuse in its 10-9 setback against No. 6/4 Duke on Saturday, March 28 in Durham, N.C. It was the Orange's seventh game decided by a goal in its last nine contests.
The Blue Devils (8-4, 4-1) led 4-1 before three consecutive goals by Treanor, junior Taylor Gait and junior Halle Majorana tied the score with 3:15 remaining in the first half. Taylor Trimble found the back of the net with three seconds on the clock to give Duke a 5-4 halftime lead.
Brigid Smith netted the first goal of the second half to extend Duke's lead to two before sophomore Taylor Poplawski and Treanor scored back-to-back goals to again even the score at 6-6. The teams traded goals before Smith and Katie Trees found the back of the net put the Blue Devils back up 10-8. Gait recorded her second goal of the game at the 9:05 mark to cut the deficit to one with 9:05 remaining, but that was close as Syracuse (8-4, 1-2) could get.
Treanor led the Orange with three points, while freshman Riley Donahue had a goal and an assist. Smith led Duke with three goals. Syracuse outshot Duke, 22-17, while the Blue Devils picked up 13 ground balls to 12 for the Orange. SU held a slight advantage in the draw circle, winning 11-of-21. Senior goalkeeper Kelsey Richardson made three saves for the Orange, and Kelsey Duryea had nine for the Duke.
The Orange returns home to host Virginia Tech on Saturday, April 4 at 10 a.m. in the Carrier Dome.
