SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 15 Syracuse opened its exhibition schedule with a 3-0 setback to No. 3 Georgetown on Saturday, Aug. 15 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The match was part of Syracuse's annual Fan Fest.
Â
The preseason opener was a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament third-round match played in the nation's capital. In that game, the Orange held a 1-0 advantage for most of the second half, but the Hoyas scored in the 80th minute to even the score and then found the back of the net 3:43 into overtime to lift Georgetown by Syracuse.
Â
This game featured a very different Orange lineup as four freshman were among the starting 11, while four others came off the bench in the second half. Among those who donned the Orange for the first time were goalkeepers Hendrik Hilpert and Austin Aviza, who will try to replace Alex Bono, who was an NSCAA All-American and MAC Hermann Trophy finalist last year. The pair combined for six saves.
Â
"We have a lot of new faces so for them to play their first games today was great," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "We scheduled this particular game for a reason. We wanted to test ourselves against a team that will be there right at the end (of the season). The first half I thought our energy and enthusiasm was good. There are a lot of positives to take from today, even though the score might not indicate that."
Â
Syracuse had the first scoring chance when junior Oyvind Alseth slipped the ball to sophomore Julian Buescher on the left side, but Buescher's shot went just wide. The Hoyas got on the scoreboard in the fifth minute when Peter Schropp served the ball into the box, where he connected with Peter Muyl. Muyl headed the ball into the right corner of the net to give Georgetown a 1-0 lead.
Â
Brett Campbell accounted for Georgetown's other two goals, both coming in the second half. The first came when Aviza stopped a shot by Declan McCabe but couldn't control the ball. Campbell took advantage and put his shot in the back of the net to extend the Hoyas' lead. He added another unassisted goal in the 88th minute for the 3-0 final.
Â
Syracuse's offense produced five corner kicks and six shots, but couldn't find the back of the net as the Orange had its string of seven straight exhibition wins snapped. Hilpert played the first half in goal and recorded one save, while Aviza recorded five saves after intermission. One of Aviza's saves came on a Georgetown breakaway in the 83rd minute. The Hoyas finished with 12 shots, nine of which were on goal, and four corner kicks.

The Orange is back in action on Wednesday, Aug. 19 when it hosts Buffalo in an exhibition match at the SU Soccer Stadium at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
